The basic behavioral framework reflects the coherence of our inner and outer world with the components that cause behaviour. This shows that the unconscious is constantly stimulated by what the senses pick up from the outside world, the signals that the body gives off, the emotions from the unconscious and the thoughts that flash through the head. Environment, body, emotion and own thoughts compete with each other for attention all the time. It leads to a fascinating interplay of automatic, autonomous and attentive behaviour. What these are is stipulated in What Classifies as Behaviour. In short a recap:
- Automatic behavior (routines) is a thoughtless and spontaneous response to what presents itself. We know it as the learned autopilot.
- Attentive behavior (reasoning) is acting consciously and thoughtfully by coming up with answers to the issues that arise. We do this by talking to ourselves and imagining situations.
- Autonomous behavior (reflexes) is the response to substances and signals of the body. The autonomic nervous system controls all kinds of vital functions and processes in the body from the brain stem and spinal cord.
The interplay
We have seen how automatic, attentive and autonomous behaviour works. Now it may appear that these three act completely independent of each other. But in reality they of course do not. They sometimes act alone, but most of the time these three interact and work together to continuously produce some kind of behaviour. Behaviour is not a discrete act, but a continuum of comings and goings. The unremitting interaction between the building blocks of the behaviour framework makes sure of this. Together they form a physiological, biological and neurological control loop. And to what end? The interplay can either strike a harmonic cord or a false discord. This is why someone can actually desire something consciously, while their emotional subconscious and body disagree. Disharmony is often the case in trying to break bad habits. This interplay is what makes behaviour so fascinating.
